Hard Drive Replacement help

Hi, I hope you can answer my question?

on reading your parts guide, I noticed that you have to replace the hard drive with the same manufacturer. I followed the guide to open up my IMac (worked a treat) and noticed that I have a Hitachi 1TB HDD. do I have to get an Hitachi HDD or can I use others?

also on reading up on info I noticed that Western digital took over the part of Hitachi dealing storage solutions does this mean I could use a Western Digital HD. Please help need my Mac back and can't afford a new one.

Yes, Hitachi sold its HD division to Western Digital and they in turn created a separate company called HGST.

As to needing to replace like manufactured drives: While one can do that, I prefer to choose what I want. Which you can do here!

The rub is you'll need to replace the thermal sensor cable harness with the correct cable for your new HD (i.e. Hitachi for Seagate).

Here's the rundown of the different temp cables:

922-9223 - Hitachi

922-9224 - Seagate

922-9225 - Western Digital

If you want to add some zip to your system please look at replacing your old HD for a SSHD unit (HD-SSD hybrid drive) they really do improve performance!
