After some research, I believe I have found the answer to my own question. The Motorola i886 Troubleshooting Page suggests that I may not my holding down the button long enough. It also offers that the battery may be drained, not connected properly, or dead. If the latter two are the issue then the Motorola i886 Battery Replacement guide should be followed to change batteries.
