Horizontal lines across bottom third of screen?

I have just got MBP secondhand and it has horizontal lines across the bottom of screen approximately two thirds the way up. The area does not display anything behind it and the cursor disappears behind it when moving cursor around.

Do you have any advice on what could be the problem before I purchase any replacement parts.

Keith, looks like a bad LCD driver. Those parts are integrated with your panel, you most likely will have to repalce the panel. Of course you always want to make sure that all the cables are properly connected etc., but this is most likely a bad LCD.
