Swapping out the HD for a SSD is not really possible as the SSD doesn't have the needed thermal sensor internally, unlike the HD. So far the best solution is to install a 2.5" hybrid drive (Seagate SSHD or Western Digital Black2).

Warning! this is a not an easy job! Review the IFIXIT guide: iMac Intel 21.5" EMC 2805 Hard Drive Replacement. It's quite easy to damage the LCD if you don't have the correct tools and follow the guide on the correct placement.


Sadly the OWC 2011 cable won't work in this system as we once thought.

The problem is the SSD does not have a thermal sensor (it doesn't need one unlike a HD). So when you replace the HD with an SSD in the newer series of iMac's you need to put in a comparable HD that has the needed sensor (not all HD do!) and if your drive doesn't have a sensor (HD or SSD) you need to install one. Which is what this special part does.

@ A Bit of PC - Yes & No ;-} The interface is SATA III and will work from that perspective. But! The built-in thermal management system (SMC) can't access the expected signal from the SSD so the system goes into overdrive trying to cool it down by ramping up the fans RPM. While one could use some fan control software to override the SMC you put your system at risk of overheating. You may think you've put the fan speed at the correct RPM, the system could need more cooling which it can't get at that moment. Basically, you're killing your system by a thousand cuts. The other aspect here is the fan control software needs to use a hardware IRQ to read the thermal sensors & RPM which slows the system down if you fire it off to often, so the more times you run the software to read the temp the worse your system performance is, if you lengthen the time to gain performance you run the risk of overheating. Which is why the software method is not a good way to go here.
