2008 MacBook Pro crashes all programs after waking from Sleep Mode?

I have a late 2008 MacBook Pro that is having problems restoring from sleep mode. Every time I try to wake it up, I am unable to save any of the work in applications that were open previously, unable to open new applications, and unable to save on my desktop. I get this error using sleep mode with both hot corners and accessing it from the apple menu. The only way I can get anything working again is a manual restart.

It started in Snow Leopard, I upgraded to Maverick and it is still happening. I've installed a new hard drive and restored my old hard drive with Time Machine without luck. I've reset the PRAM.

Anyone have any ideas why this is happening?

Lets give this a try: Do you have an external drive (FireWire being best here).

Using the Mavericks installer prep the HD and make it bootable (a fresh disk would be ideal). Once you get to that point alter the boot disk setting so this fresh system is not used for the boot up. But run your apps from the internal HD.

Set the system up to the expected failure point and see if the problem still happens. If it clears it up we know something you carried over from your restore is messing things up. If the problem is still present we'll need to dig into this deeper.
