Memory will not go to 8gb

with 2 4gb sticks installed, at startup you just get the beeps, nothing else. One at a time you get 4gb, i have 5gb running now. One 1gb and one 4gb stick, the system has been upgraded to Mavricks from Snow Leopard. With Snow Leopard it ran both 4gb sticks, total of 8gb.

Any clues as to why it will not see the 8gb total, with no beeping of course.

Thanks!

Here are the stats for this Macbook 7.1

OS X 10.9.5 (13F34)

Boot Rom: MB71.0039.B09

SMC Version: 1.60F6

So I take it that the system should be up to date to see the 8MB (2-4mb sticks), I will have to check the late 2009 Macbook 6.1 for the same as it recognized the 8MB. So Strange!

Does your system have a Boot ROM Version MB51.007D.B03 or newer? Follow this Apple TN on how to check and the needed steps to upgrade: EFI and SMC firmware updates for Intel-based Macs. Start there and let us know what happens.
