Why does my computer unexpectedly restart on its own?

My computer will occasionally shutdown by itself without warning. Any web browser windows or programs I have open will automatically close, and the computer will shutdown like it would if I had prompted a shutdown.

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Nathan Jansen, depending on if it restarts or not, which you did not tell us. Heat and low RAM would most certainly not cause a forced shutdown. Those would most likely either just shut down, or freeze your, computer up. Check for Malware and Virus and see if that looks ok. Check your BIOS and your operating system to make sure that you do not have it prompted to shut down. If all those are clear, then look in the Event Logs and see if it shows anything. To get to the event viewer click on START and type in EVENTVWR.EXE and then press the Enter key on the keyboard and it should open the Event Viewer. Always remember that the more information your question has, the higher the likelihood in getting a valid answer.Hope this helps, good luck

Nathan, this sounds like it can be multiple reasons for the unexpected reboot.

First, are you running a lot of programs at once? You could be experiencing a crash due to the enormous amount of windows or programs running at the same time. Try to run fewer programs at a time.

If this doesn't change anything, you might want to consider additional RAM to your decide to increase performance. Having extra random access for your laptop will provide extra support when your decide has various programs opened at once. With more RAM, your system will be able sustain big files or programs.

Good luck, Nathan.

If your laptop is randomly shutting down without you prompting it yourself, it may be due a defective battery or low RAM. If it is the battery, you can test if it is defective by following the steps in the troubleshooting page under “Defective Battery”. If it is the RAM, you may have to purchase and install additional RAM.

If your system shuts down after being turned on awhile it could be your fan is not functioning. It may be burned out, or mechanically seized up or your thermostat on the motherboard may be malfunctioning. This happened to my system and it turned out to be mechanically seized up,lucky me. Find dismantling instructions , be very careful removing things. The break easily. Especially connectors and the volume control on the motherboard.

This is an old post but it might help someone else who comes across this same problem.

This example works for Windows 7 -

At "Start" or "Desktop" -> "Computer" --> right click on "Properties", and then tap "Advanced system settings"

In the advanced options of the system menu, click on "Settings" for Startup and Recovery.

In Startup and Recovery, uncheck the "Automatically restart" for system failure. Click "OK" after unchecking the checkbox.

This things happened in my computer.

Make sure if your computer have a virus. It causes by some kind of virus because it eat/waste the core/system file of a computer.

Or it can be happen if you have a antivirus in your computer. In some cases antivirus block system files of a computer. Then you should reinstall windows in your computer. Maybe it helps. If not then take your computer to a computer hardware store to find out what is the problem.

Thanks.

Computer occasionally shutdown by itself without warning because of following reasons:

1. Heat related issue - Most computers today are designed to turn off automatically if any of its inner components overheat. Often, heat related issues occur when the computer is working hard, e.g. playing a graphically intense computer game.

2. Hardware related issues - Any failing hardware component in your computer could cause your computer to unexpectedly turn off without warning. If you have recently added any new hardware, remove it from the computer to make sure it is not the cause of the problem.

3. Computer virus - Your computer may be infected with a virus or other malware that is designed to shut down your computer upon certain conditions. If your computer seems to be turning off when executing a certain program at specific times of the day, it could be infected.

I did almost all the steps which are commonly found on the Internet.

1. Unchecked automatic restart.

2. Opened the cabinet and installed external fan to cool down.

3. Updated several times even installed OS multiple times like windows 7, 8.1, 10 Android (remix os ) & Ubuntu.

4. changed the dward value in regedit.

Still don't have any idea of restarting by itself without warning. if you find sth valueable please do share with us. Sometimes it goes so good without any error but sometimes it just restart multiple times. At last i keep it switched off directly.
