Replaced screen, notification light on, screen black

I just followed a youtube video to replace the LCD and digitizer assembly. When I plugged in the phone and waited for it to load, I heard notification sounds, saw the notifications lights blink, but the screen remained black. Where do I begin with trouble shooting? Is there a specific connector that could be the issue? Is there a way to determine if I received a defective screen?
