Upgrade CPU to Q9450

HI!

I have a late 2009 imac, now has a E7600 cpu and this operates at 1033mhz.

Do you think that might work with a Q9450 cpu? This micro works 1333mhz.

I have memories of the two speeds, so that would not be any problem.

First you'll need to review your systems current CPU and socket then, review the CPU you have to see if it's compatible. Don't forget the Max TDP can't be larger for the new chip.

Here's the tools I use:

So here's what I find:

Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E7600 (3M Cache, 3.06 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB)

Intel Core 2 Quad Processor Q9450 (12M Cache, 2.66 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB)

While the sockets needed are the same (LGA775)

The FSB Speeds are different: 1066 MHz Vs 1333 MHz. The controller logic chips won't support the higher speed.

And lastly, the Max TDP is not the same: 65 Watts Vs 95 Watts. Which means the power supply and system cooling won't support the added load.

Bottom line here: These two chips are not interchangeable in this system. Sorry ;-{

Thanks for the reply !

Then I think that would be the best option: Intel Core 2 Quad Processor Q8400S

Do you think this would be a good option, the current micro I have is the E7600 and goes to 1033, this would be in 1333, the TDP is the same.

Thks!

Almost, while the Max TDP is the same, the FSB is too fast you need a chip that can run at 1066 MHz not 1333 MHz. Check the support chips specs they are not designed to run at the higher speed.

So as Brando said Q6600 or 6700 doesn't work but,

does anyone try others cpu with LGA775 socket and 1066Mhz FSB bus like :

- Core 2 extreme QX6700 or QX6800

- Xeon X3210 or X3220 or X3230 ?

Was this ever tested? I have tried Q6700 and Q9650 with no luck.

The only better chip this system can support is this one: 3.33 GHz Core 2 Duo (E8600) That is if you have the 3.06 GHz model.

Thank you Dan! I have the E8600 on order from eBay now. After trying 3 other processors.. I'd like to make this information more clear for others.

Yes, iMac 27" Late 2009 E7600, can be upgraded to E8600, and E8600 only.

I find a xeon 3060 with TDP 65W and FSB 1066 MHz. Can work?

The Q6700 works (kind of). OS X will likely kernel panic after putting it in, which you can bypass by deleting the CPU power management kernel extension from single user mode. Once doing that OS X only was able to see one core. Linux and Windows 10 boot without issues, but only see two out of four cores. The likely issues seem to be around either BIOS or power. Only been working on it for a few days, but if you know of anyone that might be more knowledgeable on the subject, please send them my way.
