its an iPod 5th gen. orange one, with 8gb.
the words and display all shows up with color and everything, it just doesnt have any resolution. I know it doesnt need a new screen, just maybe a lightbulb.

sounds like you do need a new screen, unless you can somehow get the backlight from the rest of the LCD. You can buy the screens from here

I edited the hyperlink to use wiki syntax, making the blurb appear below the answer.
check Youtube for videos. They have a few showing how to remove the backlight from behind the screen. It's just a tiny LED mounted to the board. I haven't found anywhere that I can buy a replacement LED so I just haven't bothered opening mine up yet.
