External HDD Enclosure Not Mounting

Hi,

A few days ago I dropped my macbook, thus I think I broke the HDD. I bought an enclosure to accees my data on another mac. The hdd fits perfectly but I cannot get any mac or pc to see the external disc. The light is on when I plug it in the usb port but nothing happens. Any suggestions?

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Sadly, it does sound like the drive has died.

If you can't see it from another working Mac then either the drive is bad or the case is if its new. Given the fact you dropped your system its most likely the drive is gone. Sorry ;-{

Thanks, Dan. My macbook still turns on and loads the apple logo so I thought the drive should still be ok-ish. Also when I plug the enclosure into my iMac I can hear it spinning. :S Would a specialist be able to recover the lost files?

Thats a good sign the Apple logo is appearing. As to savaging your files from your bad HD. There are labs which can repair the drive so if possible the data can be saved. I must warn you this is very expensive and its still a bit of a gamble if the files (some) can be saved. Google data recover services to see if you can find one close to to you. Here in the states there are a few good ones if you feel you need to send it out.
