Why is my iPhone not responding apart from showing apple logo

My iPhone 4 has stopped working for no apparent reason. I have tried turning it on, restarting it and pressing all the buttons and have had no response. When I plug it in to the wall or to my laptop the apple logo appears as if it is turning on. However, it just stays on the apple logo and does nothing. After a while it flashes and comes back onto the logo and will not get off it. As soon as I unplug it the screen goes black again. I have done nothing to the iPhone to cause this to happen and there is no visible damage apart from the obvious fact that it is not working in general.

My iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes when I plug it into my laptop as it doesn't fully turn on because it is stuck with the apple logo. Therefore, I cant restore it etc or even back it up and take my photos off it before I restore it because my laptop doesn't register it.

As @con suggested, this is mostly due to battery problem. For hardware problem better to call Apple support team to arrange a fix for that.
