Flashing question mark icon at start up

On start up I get the question mark icon. I've started up with the install disk and run disk utilities but the internal drive doesn't show up. I've also started up with Data Rescue and it doesn't see the internal drive either. My assumption is the drive is dead. But how can I be sure it's not the mother board or something else before I order a new drive and take it apart?

Answer this question I have this problem too

You could connect a second Mac to your system in target mode. This allows the other Mac to see your system HD as an external HD.

Follow this Apple TN: Startup key combinations for Intel-based Macs on the needed key combos to set your system in target mode.
