external optical drive doesn't work

I've recently replaced the optical drive slot in my MacBook Pro early 2011 with an SSD, and relegated the old SuperDrive to an external USB enclosure. However, it does not work. The disk enters, and begins to spin, but never mounts at all.

I have tried editing the Boot.plist and the proper kext file, but it never mounts, except for one time. What can I do to fix it?

Answer this question I have this problem too

forgive me if you have tried any of this, just throwing ideas, bad USB port, bad external enclosure for the drive, drive damaged in the transfer, see if the drive mounts when reinstalled into its original location

I tried all those-- other than reinstalling it into its original port, none of them work consistently. It only mounts if I shut it down, and then reboot.
