MacBook SSD Swap Over

When replacing the SSD does it have to be a specific one? Do you know of a list of compatible ones if its exists?

While the SSD is a removable component in this system. Right now Apple is the only supplier of the SSD.

Sadly the modules (M.2) are a standard but the I/O of the module is not! Each module is programable (firmware on the I/O chip). So two exact same looking modules from the same company one will work and the other not.
