Total MacBook Pro rebuild up to new specs

I was told by Apple that my 2007 Macbook pro can no longer support OS updates I'm in need of rebuilding it but have no idea where to start.

This is what i have:

Macbook Pro 17"

v 10.5.8

2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Dou

2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM

ATI Radeon X1600

What would I need to do to get my Macbook Pro Working with the most current programs requesting 10.8 or higher? Is this even possible? Any help is much appreciated.

Sorry Nick there are limits here with what one can do with a laptop unlike a desktop system.

Even if you could change out the CPU the systems BIOS (EFI) is only 32bit (from EveryMac: This system can run the last version of OS X 10.7 "Lion." However, although it has a 64-bit processor, it has a 32-bit EFI and is not capable of booting into 64-bit mode), This is what is limiting you.

The best option here is to find a used MacBook Pro 17" which is newer. How about looking for a Apple MacBook Pro "Core i7" 2.5 17" Late 2011 which is the last 17" Apple made and can run Mavericks. Otherwise your options are one of the newer 13" or 15" models (new or used).

Or, how about sticking with your system running Lion and max out your hardware to gain some performance.

What I would do is max the RAM to 4GB and upgrade the HD to a SSHD (Seagate). Don't forget to make sure you are running the latest EFI firmware for your system. Follow this Apple TN: EFI and SMC firmware updates for Intel-based Macs.

Good Luck!
