scott, take a look on here. It's for a 325 i but should be identical for your engine. Hope this helps, good luck.

Friend,your water pump is not working and at the same time your car undergoes to overheat at a low engine speed or at rest position. When you start your engine,the temperature will fall. Also,you are trying to reduce the top radiator hose with the engine warmed up and running. If you find the E46 water pump to be dropping on the back of hose,you may feel pressure arises once when pressure of the hose is released. Some times there is a little drip coming from water pump housing itself. So,if the pressure is not observed then it's proved that water pump is failing and certain repair is required to the system.

One of my friend recently faced this type of problem,so you should give primary focus on following points:

(i)Fast of all,drain out the cooling system

(ii)Remove cooling motor fan conceal.
