Laptop wont boot because of dead hard drive

My laptop wont start because the hard drive is broke! I put my computer into a shop and thats what the guy told me. I only get to the screen where it says' press f2' etc, but it doesnt even allow me to go into the f2 menu, it just keeps on restarting itself. If i was to buy a replacement hardrive, would it work again, or would the replacement hardrive have to have windows preinstalled on it? Thanks for your help. Its an acer 5742, model pew71. Thanks

Hi Paul,

To find out if Harddrive is the issue I would:

- remove the Harddrive from the Laptop.

- Boot the Laptop and see if you can get into BIOS.

- Try to boot from a bootable CD (widows 7 , Linux or other bootable disc)

If it works and starts up, you can buy a new Harddrive and install it.

If not you need to find root cause why it will not enter BIOS or start up.

Best of luck,
