Contacts disappeared from iPhone 4s!

Out of nowhere my contact list and favorites were completely empty! The only thing left were numbers witout any other info in my recent list. What happened? I somehow got all info back after 2 hrs of playing with setting options and finally plugging into my Mac Pro laptop. I would like to know how this happens and how to prevent it in the future!

Are you connecting to the cloud?

I did have contacts in cloud, but have taken them off today. I'm not sure how and why that would make a difference.

Every time my phone connected to iCloud it was restoring to all the old contacts, photos etc. truly annoying feature!
