Yes, but you're going to need a new backplate. The 40GB back is thicker then the 20GB. Both the 4G and the iPod Photo use the same hard drives too, but the firmware is different. If you use a 4G drive in a Photo you need to restore, and vice versa. So yes, it is possible with a new backplate.
