malfunction on a video chip on logic board

I need you professional opinion...

My MacBook Pro 15" i7 early 2011 system was diagnosed with a bad video chip on logic board (diagnose from an Apple dealer).

My laptop is 28 mouths old. Apple doesn't care about it, because is out of warranty and I didn't get AppleCare. My MacBook Pro has two graphic cards, when I open a photo in lightroom or photoshop, it freeze the screen… I need to reset a lot of times, to restart with other graphic card. My opinion, the new MAC OSX Lion 10.8.4 has an incompatibility with the ATI graphic card… but they disagree with me. I can’t start my laptop with the original DVD’s (MAC OSX snow leopard 10.6). Can you give me some advice or help?

Gratefully yours

Antonio

Antonio - You really need to create you own question as placing it here just hides it. Can yo give us the last three digits of your serial number so we can correctly identify your system.

Your systems OS automatically switches between the different graphics engines depending on the computational requirements based on OpenGL.

OpenGL has been improved over the years so it's important to update your OS & apps as there are some known problems with it (locking up). I would strongly recommend upgrading your OS to Mountain Lion as well as LightRoom and PhotoShop to the current releases.

In addition, I would add more memory as editing images or videos requires a lot of RAM. 4GB is on the thin side I would at least double it to 8GB if you can, you can boost your system up to 16GB if you are working on very big images.

You could try upping the memory first to see if that helps. But given your symptoms I suspect your OS/Apps is were you have the issue.

While it's possible the Radeon HD 6750M chip is having a problem you can run AHT your self to see if it comes up with an error Apple Hardware Test. If you get any errors post them here for us to check them out. Make sure you have your system powered with the power adapter when running the test.

Let us know what you find - Good Luck!
