I hope you don't mind a new question on this thread. You all seem to know about these things. Would an iPod Touch 1st generation still be able to connect to iTunes?

If you have an old OS with an old version of iTunes, it is possible. If you have a newer system, it might as well be replaced because it is impossible to downgrade itunes.
