Grey Grey screen upon start, after a while folder with question mark!?

Hi!

A friend of mine gave me his old an not working MacBook Air 1.86GHz A1237.

Problem:

It shows a grey screen upon start, after a while folder with question mark appears.

That's all that happens.

Another friend suggested I replace the hard drive, but it's about 280$ so I want to make sure what the problem really is...

Any suggestions what the problem could be?

Thanks for your help!

Well to start with your system is mostly working here as its asking you for the system files which is can't located on the HD or SSD you have in your system.

Do you have the external USB Apple SuperDrive & grey recovery CD/DVD that came with your system? If you do you can try starting your system with it.

Or, do you have access to the USB Thumb drive your system was shipped with (if you have a newer model) which has the OS recovery files on it?

If not do you not have either do you have another Mac running Lion (10.5) or older OS-X, Which you can connect to by USB (using a hub) or Via WiFi? If you do you can start your MBA in Target mode and try to see if the HD or SSD is present and working.

Here' a few good Apple TN's to review and copies of the online manual:

Once you get your system up and running make sure to checkout the Systems firmware updates: MacBook Air EFI Firmware Update 1.1 & MacBook Air Bluetooth Firmware Update 1.0
