Why is my phone making a loud buzzing when I pick up?

When I answer a call, all the caller hears is a loud buzzing noise until I switch to speakerphone. After I switch to speakerphone, the caller can hear me perfectly.

It may be your bottom mic that is damaged. Not sure how it could happen but this is the guide that replaces the mic. The mic is located on the dock connector. iPhone 4 Dock Connector Replacement
