Why does the computer shut itself off every few minutes?

Our iMac will just turn itself off, and reboot for no reason every few minutes while we are trying to use it. Any ideas on why this might be happening and how to fix it?

If the computer is spontaneously rebooting/shutting down one of the first things you should try is resetting the smc. Now if you want to check if the issue is in the OS you can boot up to the install disk and see if the issue persists there.

Try changing the power settings, and see the time the display will sleep and the time the Hard drive will sleep.
