john, I would suggest that you take a look at this video. It is a skill that needs to be acquired and will take practice, especially if done with a heat gun. Remember that this will only work if your error is caused by solder cracks etc. It will not fix other errors. Also, make sure that you position the board in such a way that it won't move. There is nothing worse then bumping the board while the solder for the chip is starting to liquify. Reflowing a chip is also a bit more than just blasting it with hot air. There are profiles that should be observed. Normally a reflow is done with a reflow station, those can be programmed for the profile. I attached a typical lead-free reflow profile. Hope this helps, good luck.

Thank you for the downvote. It would help me out if you could tell me why you downvoted it. In the past we reserved downvotes for blatantly wrong answers, but may be this has changed.

Tools needed for this tutorial

Heat gun 1000w (i use a Wagner)

1 paper towel (yes a paper towel, read further and you will understand)

Level Surface

Timer

Step 1: DO THIS SEVERAL TIMES.

TAKE YOUR PAPER TOWEL AND LAY IT ON A CERAMIC AREA OR ANY AREA THAT WILL NOT CATCH FIRE.

DRAW A CIRCLE 1X1 INCH IN THE CENTER (THIS IS YOUR FAKE "PROCESSOR".)

POUR A FEW DROPS OF WATER IN THE CENTER OF THE CIRCLE. AS THE WATER DROPS ONTO THE PAPER TOWEL THE WATER WILL SPREAD THIS IS YOUR AREA OF INTEREST IN THE REFLOW ANYTHING OUTSIDE OF THIS AREA IS A "NO FLY ZONE"

THE POINT OF THE ABOVE IS TO TEACH YOU HOW TO CONTROL HEAT.

STEP 2: SET YOU TIMER FOR 2 MINUTES.

STEP 3: TURN ON YOUR HEATGUN AND SLOWLY WARM UP THE AREA CONCENTRATING ON THE CENTER PERIODICALLY.

(THINK OF A COMMERCIAL BIG !@# BLENDER THAT GOES SLOWLY AROUND AND UP & DOWN)

IF YOU CAN DRY THE PAPER TOWEL CENTER AND AREAS AROUND IT EVENLY WITHOUT BURNING THE PAPER TOWEL OR THE DRY AREAS YOU ARE READY TO REFLOW.

HINT* YOU GOTTA DRY WITHIN THE 2 MINUTES.

NOT 1:58

NOT 2:05

NOT 1:45

GET IT?

IF YOU THINK YOU GOT IT. FIND YOUR " GPU" ON THE COMPAQ AND REFLOW IT.

You can read all you want to about how to reflow. If you can't control heat then you are going to either :float the chip" or bridge the connection. You have a cold solder joint. you don't need to completely reflow the board or "liquefy" the solder. So i gave you the easy route.

because you of you answer. he didn't ask for history lesson or machine used for re-flow he asked how to do it.

so yes your answer was wrong

I do not quite see a history lesson in my answer. I linked to a video that "shows" a good example of a reflow with a heat gun. I also answered the part "what is a suitable heat (celcius) and the equipment.. better a proper procedure." I actually just reiterated what you had previously commented on "Basically re-flowing is an art that takes time. Anyone can put a heat gun to a board. Re-flowing by hand takes practice." Sorry you feel that my answer was wrong.
