harwinder, when changing oil, you'll need to empty the oil pan first before proceeding. The oil pan has a plug that needs to be detached to drain the oil from the pan. The oil filter on a 2001 Nissan maxima is on the right side of the engine, next to the engine oil pan. Check this video for the whole procedure. hope this helps, good luck.
