iPhone 4s Speaker not playing/ working intermittently

The speaker/ volume control is not working on my Iphone 4s. The headphone jack works just fine and some sounds (initial unlock click, alarms, and setting ringer volume through settings) play indicating speakers themselves are semi-operational. When I select the volume buttons either nothings displays or it says "volume" with no indicator bars. I have tried restoring with no change. Any ideas what is happening here?

Also, it was dropped in a toilet in December, but had no problems afterwards. I placed in rice for several days and it has worked perfectly until today (early April).

Thanks for any advice in fixing this issue!

Thanks for the feedback. Yesterday the headphone jack also started cutting out intermittently. I have to unplug the headphones and re-plug them again to make it work. Does this indicate a different problem as they are 2 separate parts? It does it using different applications, so is not specific to one app being used.

Thanks!

Had the same problem. Managed the problem by a thorough cleanse of the dock connector equipped with a surgical headlight, loupes, micro forceps, fine gauze and alcohol. Don't forget the connectors at the sides of the dock.
