iPod hard drive is write protected when used in an external enclosure

Hi,

I have just replaced the hard drive of my 5.5gen 80gb ipod with a new 240gb 1.8" hard drive and all is swell!

I wanted to use the old 80gb hard drive as an external drive so I purchased a ZIF 1.8" enclosure http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/310571032275?s.... The problem is that I can not "see" the drive in 'My Computer" (Windows 7). In Disk Management when I try to initialize the drive it says that "the request could not be performed because of an I/O device error".

I have also tried EaseUS Partition Master with no luck as it says that the drive is write protected. I have tried through DISKPART (Windows 7) and used the "attributes disk clear readonly" command with no luck either.

Any suggestions please?

Thanks

freeman, looks like your enclosure is SATA interface, whereas your hard drive is most likely a PATA interface, so they are incompatible. Your enclosure may support ZIF socket drives, but not the PATA interfae To confirm this, we would need to know which drive you have.

Hi there,

I connect this drive: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/iPod-Classic-T... (it came from my ipod 5.5th gen 80GB) with this enclosure: http://www.amazon.co.uk/KingSpec-Mobile-....

The enclosure is compatible with the drive as I have already used it with a 240GB ZIF/PATA hard drive (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/110995854328?s...).

I have just found a similar case here: Able to "unlock" a Toshiba 1.8" hd from a 5th gen iPod?

and it seems that my problem cannot be resolved...

Thanks for your answer.

Check the physical block size of your drives. I do believe that those have a 4kb physical block and due to that are not useable as regular hard drives . It will give you read/write errors and will not be accessible.
