Make sure its not on hold and then hold the play button down until the screen goes black. Then put it on hold. To turn it on, take it off hold and hold down the play button again.

Yep. If this doesn't seem to be working, try going to Settings > Menu > Sleep > "On". Then from your main menu you can just select "Sleep".
Activating the sleep menu item worked for me, I haven't had my 80gb ipod video in about 10 years, I also recovered tons of data by finding how to use disk mode again from some other instructions! stuff I thought I lost years ago.
