How do I fix the lighting thing on my iPod?

I'm not very techy and I'm only 14... But my iPod got wet and it turns on and I can do everything on it except it doesn't really light up... Like at all. The only way I can see it is if I hold a flashlight up to it or something. I've read a few similar questions/answers but it's too complicated for me to follow. Someone wanna dumb it down a bit and tell me how I can possibly fix it? Thank you so much!

Heather, number one thing to do is to disassemble your iPod and clean it. Otherwise you are running the risk of corrosion failure. Clean every part with 90+% of isopropyl alcohol and a soft brush. Once you got that done, replace the battery. Any iDevice (and others) should have their batteries exchanged for a new one to prevent failure or worse due to the exposure. Once you have that accomplished, reevaluate. It is possible that this is caused by the backlight IC or the backlight coil, but it is also simply possible that it is the actual backlight in your display. That is the easier one to change, get a new display first. Consider the backlight circuit in simple ways, the LCD is the bulb, the IC is the light switch and the coil is the power source. Take a look at the teardown to see if you might want to tackle it. If not, you might try a service to do that job for you. Hope this helps, good luck.

I can't disassemble it and clean it... Or replace the battery... Is there a huge risk in not doing these things? I seriously have no idea what any of those things are though...

There is always a risk to it will corroded (rust ) on the inside. You are taking a chance that it will fail if it does not get done. Is it possible that it will last and give you no problems? Sure, anything is possible, but I do not recommend it.

Hi Heather,

It seems that the IC for the backlight is gone. See here:

However, the first thing I would do is to let it dry for a couple of days next to a warm souce like an air conditioning or so. If the problem still exists, you might need to replace this IC.

I let it dry for like a week and it still didn't work. What's an IC? Sorry I don't really know anything about iPods and I would never be able to figure out how to replace it or whatever..

Heather, IC stands for "Integrated Circuit". See here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Integrated_... I would follow oldturkey's excellent recommendations first. However, if technology isn't your "hobby" and you don't feel confident that you can do it, I would also try to find a place in your area where you will be helped. Steffen
