Cannot update software on new phone

When I plug my new iPhone 3GS into my pc it offers to update the software and seems to go through the process but the new version is not restored and as soon as the update finishes I am offered another update! The phone currently has 4.3.5 (8L1).

I updated to the latest version of iTunes yesterday.

Hi Jenny,

make a backup of your data in itunes. Then put the phone into DFÜ Mode. 3 sec Powerbutton, then 10 sec power + home button and then 15 sec homebutton. After that you should be able to update your phone. after that you can return your data from the backup to your phone...
