Won't boot up. How can I get past the grey screen?

Please tell me what to do to fix this. I took out the battery and put it back in, tried holding the shift, and tried holding command, apple, and R & P

What else can I try?

Try booting up from your system installation disk. Insert the disk and hold down the "C" key till the Apple logo appears. Go to the second screen pull down menu to Utilities > Disk Utility and see if your hard drive can be repaired.

Unfortunately, I don't have the instillation disk. Will it cost me anything to have the apple store do it at my appointment tomorrow? If there are any other options, I'd appreciate any and all advice.

In the case can you clone your Macintosh HD to an external HD using a clone software then you can launch Disk Utility from the clone HD and repair your HD on mac, eliminating the need for the install disk. All you need is an external HD and a clone utility like Carbon Copy Cloner, Stellar Drive Clone etc.

A replacement system installation disk from Apple costs $16. Just call them or ask and give them your serial number.
