Replaced hdd but now is not seen in itunes or windows

Hi There,

I’ve upgraded the hdd on my 5th gen 80gb iPod for a toshiba 120gb disc that is already formatted for iPods. the iPod when turned on comes up with a screen informing me to connect to itunes and restore the software.

heres the problem…. itunes does not see the iPod, or display any messages saying that it is doing anything anyway. the iPod screen once connected to the pc changes to the do not disconnect screen, the battery shows its charging and randomly a sync icon appears in the top left of the iPods display. its been like this now for about 8 hours!!!

Any suggestions guys would be grately received?

Many thanks in advance.

it doesn´t matters that the hard drive is already formatted for iPods. The hard drive has to be formatted in this iPod to be recognized. To do so you have to reset the iPod and when the screen goes blank, press the combination for Disk Mode.

When the iPod is set to Disk Mode you should be able to restore the hard drive via iTunes.

Hi thanks i had tried this several times and on to PCs to no joy. i reseated the hdd ribbon cables and tried again this time windows & itunes saw the drive and began to restore the drive 10 hours later it finished without error messgaes but still not seen in itunes and now i've got the sad face.

Any additional comments appreciated.

Hi, 10 hours to restore a drive, even an 120GB, is far to long. Did you had the same issues with the 80GB drive? If yes, maybe just the hard drive cable is damaged. To set the iPod into disk mode is difficult and may take a while.
