Automatic or manual transmission?

by

It is an automatic.

This could be as simple as a bad sensor to as complicated as a burned clutch inside your transmission. Have your car hooked up to an OBD analyzer and see what codes, if any it throws.

If you can get to an OBD analyzer it will make life easy, if you smell something funny when your car stalls out... most likely a burnt out clutch.

The automatic transmissions in Honda / Acura are known to be the weakest point on the car. They generally have problems and it sounds to me like you need to check the tranny fluid, and/or get it replaced.

It sounds like the transmission is trying to put you into "passing gear" essentially skipping the normal shift parameters and allowing you more acceleration for getting on the freeway, running from the cops, etc etc.

If you aren't a car person, transmission jobs can be very overwhelming. Good luck =)
