iMac will start with sound, loading bar and wheel but nothing else,

my Imac is powered through a battery back ups system and while starting the computer my wife accidentally unplugged the ups wall plug and the computer started with the ups beeping. Now the Imac boots with the sound and apple logo, displays the loading bar with the wheel and as the loading progresses the image slowly fades away,

Can anyone offer some advise ?

Options

Sounds like your system got corrupted. Boot up from your original system installation disk - "C key".

Go to the second screen pull down menu to Utilities > Disk Utility. Select your hard drive and see if it can be repaired.
