My iPod will only play through one headphone?

I have a 160 GB iPod Classic, bought just over a year ago... so, the warranty is no longer in effect. Basically, my headphones jack is messed up. Sound will only come out the left ear. If I press the headphones against the left side of the jack it will play correctly, but I have to hold it there in order for it to work. Is this fixable? Or should I just go ahead and buy a new one?

Sasha, it is absolutely fixable. Replace the audio jack. Follow this guide. The part is available at multiple places, depending on your geographic location. Hope this helps, good luck.

It's nothing to do with the jack, I took mine in to an Apple Store and tried it with there brand new beats and it still only played out of one ear. It's an iPod fault.

@sonofshanx you are absolutely right. that is exactly the jack that is in question. The jack on the iPod not the headphones...clearly described in the answer

I had the same problem with an Ipod and the advice I found online wasn't really helpful. I found that the jack wasn't making contact with one of the pins inside the jack socket. I took a small flathead screwdriver, inserted it and twisted it to raise the contact pin. It worked fine for me. Hope it helps!

I got the exact same problem, I wish I could see a pic of what pins you're talking about.

(For the 160 GB ipod) If you look inside the headphone jack there are two gold prongs. One on each side. I just used a pent staple to pull the one on the side that wasn't making contact and now it's playing through both sides again. (It wasn't working on the right side, but now plays perfectly with my headphones and my speaker in my office.)

I did this with a phillips head screwdriver and it worked. I could see the volume level going up and down as i turned the screwdriver.

My iPod 4 only worked on right speaker with headphones . This is how I fixed it in the following steps:

Settings

General

Accessibility

Hearing

L) & R) should be in the middle of scale.

Thank you so much, Chrissy! I was all set to restore my iPod Touch to factory settings when I came upon your advice. I followed your directions and sure enough, the L & R speakers were not in the middle for some reason. Problem solved!
