Why is the replacement speaker so quiet?

I recently replaced the earpiece speaker in a friend's iPhone 4. It's working, but it's very, very quiet. If the environment is quiet, it's usable, but if it's loud, there's no way the speaker is loud enough... Anything I did wrong, perhaps? :(
