Flash not in sync with shutter

Nikon SB800 flash seemingly works fine but the flash burst seems to happen after the shutter has closed (Nikon D300s). Have tried all the sync setting options but to no avail. The service people said there was a "problem" but I opted not to pay the cost and got a new unit.

Has anyone had any experience with this problem on an SB800?

'all the settings'? Did you verify that your shutter speed was within flash sync range? You said something about a burst. Is the flash set for TTL or manual? I suspect you could set it for repeating flash and miss the exposure. Seems to me that if it flashes, it likely would have no problem.
