Charges from Apple charger but not computer

I have an iPhone 3GS to fix that will charge from the Apple charger but when plugged into a pc it won't charge and shows up as an unknown device that may have malfunctioned. Also when it is plugged into the Apple charger it gets power but doesn't seem to store the charge as it runs out of power quickly as soon as it has been unplugged. Also I have tried cleaning the dock connector but it hasn't fixed it.

Does anyone have any idea what is the problem here?

I did manage to get it to charge fully with some fiddling and it held it's charge. I replaced the dock connector and now it charges 100% of the time and is correctly detected by the computer. Thank you for the help Turkey and Dan.

Peter not all PC systems offer power via the USB ports (or very limited power). Check your system manual on what the USB power output is.

Peter Hutchinson, the first thing I would do is to change the battery. It may charge from a charger due to the higher amperage. An AC charger supplies almost twice of what a USB port supplies. "seem to store the charge as it runs out of power quickly as" sounds like the battery for sure. At least it will give you a clean starting point. Hope this helps good luck.
