Why does my iPod not show on my computer?

I just got a used 2nd generation ipod from a friend. the first thing I did was try plug the usb into my computer (a pc running windows 7) and try to put music on it, but the ipod doesn't come up in my itunes or in my computer. Also, the only screen i can get on the ipod shows a usb wire and an itunes logo. Ive tried reseting it, reinstalling itunes, and restarting my laptop. the ipod makes a sound and starts charging when i plug into my computer but thats it. i have in ipod shuffle that connects to my computer/itunes just fine. i looked at other websites and it said itunes should ask to restore the ipod when i plug it in but nothing comes up when i plug mine in. I also tried to put it in dfu mode but it didn't work. I have no idea what else to try. any ideas?

How did you put it in DFU and what did it show when you did? Have you tried a different cable? If you have access to another computer, try that as well. Did the iPod work for your friend?

Sounds like a bad dock connector, data connections messed up. Charging still works?
