Why wont my mac mini go past the start up screen?

Why wont my mac go past the start up screen? Ive tried all the reboots and starts nothing will work just a plain gray screen

I would check the RAM. Make sure it's seated completely. Unplug, remove the battery, and then remove the RAM and replace it securely.

Next, I would check and make sure your HDD isn't dying. First thing, boot off the install DVD if possible. and run Disc Utility from there. Repair permissions, Verify permissions, Repair the Disk, and verify.

What were some of the symptoms the last time it was working properly before that result?

Mine is acting up too, wont boot, etc. I was able to get to the disc utility I selected the HDD but the options to repair etc weren't even highlighted. Does that mean the HDD is bad?

How did you get disc utility running? If you have a bootable CD/DVD or an external HD or SSD drive via ThunderBolt, FireWire, or USB. You should be able to see and fix your HD. IF not then it's possible the drive is having problems. Do you have an external case which you can place the internal drive in and a second mac? You could try seeing if the drive is accessible that way if it is then the SATA cable could be bad (Apple had a run of bad cables).
