Says I need to restart or turn off the computer

History

I turn my laptop on and it sounds as if going to start but then I get a message saying i need to turn off or press the restart button. Then it pauses.

Try starting up from your system installation disk ("C" key). If this works try using Disk Utilities on the installation disk to repair the hard drive. That failing, replace the hard drive.
