Most likely, this is caused by a defective cycling thermostat. To get you to the correct part, please give us your model number.

It is a series 80 Kenmore

I don’t believe it is a thermostat problem. The knob doesn’t turn and countdown from whatever position you set down to stop.

@bert42849 Bert, 80 is a series number not a model number. The model number will tell us exactly what kind of hardware the dryer is equipped with and allow us to look up wiring diagrams specific to that dryer.

Open the dryer door and look for a label just inside the door. Should be a line on it that says, "Model #". Come back and report what it says.

@mayer yes, but @bert42849 is tagging onto it with what sounds like a dead timer motor.

Does it stop at the end of the cycle? I have never heard or seen dryer stop itself when it detects that the clothes are dry.

The timer doesn’t shut it off. It just keeps on drying and doesn’t stop.
