Try booting the machine up in system 10 then insert the OS 9 disk and install it. It should go right in.

not sure if this is what you meant, but you won't be able to install OS 9 on this kind of machine using generic OS 9 install discs. instead the install discs for this particular machine will let you install "Classic mode" on the machine, allowing you to run OS 9 apps (but not boot in OS 9)

bac- That's what I'm trying to do, install classic mode.

This unit will run OS9 in classic mode but will not boot into OS9. OS9 will run in classic mode only in OS10.0 through 10.4. It will not run classic in 10.5. Ralph

The iBook G4 will not boot up in OS 9, nor will any other Mac introduced after Jan 2003.

see this Apple support document, "Some Computers Only Start Up in Mac OS X"

as rj713 already mentioned, you can only run OS 9 in "classic mode" on this machine

That article also states that OS9 is a file on the install disk that comes with the computer---ie the additional software. Ralph

The last machine to be able to boot in 9 was the G4 MDD 1.25. Once system 10.5 is installed system 9 will not work in emulation mode. None of the G4 iBooks will boot in system 9.

No problem--I needed to edit to include the info on 10.5. Ralph
