iPhone 4 stop working then overheating

Hi,

I have an iPhone from a friend who, overnight has stopped working. It does not light. The phone has no warranty. He asked if I could help. It overheated when it is plugged to the charger.

After an initial disassembly (remove the motherboard and put in place), he made a sign of life. Except that the screen was the rainbow colored sky randomly. He started and recognized by iTunes. The external buttons work, the vibrator, the home button and sound. As against the screen and the touch screen does not work. The temperature rose even more.

I did a hard reset and and there, the screen is on but it starts black and it overheated even more.

The overheating is mainly on the side of the phone and through the motherboard. More I live time on the charger more it rises in temperature.

What could it be? A faulty motherboard? a faulty chip or a bad welding?

Thank you in advance for your replies

This happens when the contacts between the screen connector and logic board are not seated correctly. When you first switched it on and you saw the "rainbow" screen; this is a tell-tale sign that the screen is not connected right.

Inspect the connectors on both the logic board and the screen. The connector for the screen is shown in step 30 of this guide: iPhone 4 Display Assembly Replacement

I'm not saying you were careless but you have possibly damaged a connector pin, i did this once on an iphone3GS and experienced the same problem.

The reason it is getting hot is that there is a short or a loose connection between the two and causing the components to over-work inducing heat, in some cases they may have even become damaged.

I forgot to specify that the LCD was already the rainbow sky before I open it. It was already when I connect to the charger. I will completely disassemble and inspect the various connectors to see if there are damages to the pins. If the problem comes from pins. I think it will have to resolder the connector on the motherboard? it's gonna be hot! ;)

Hi,

My friend send her iPhone 4 to an Apple Shop to change the phone. Apple replaces it without questions.

I think that was a motherboard problem.

Thank you for your answers.

i replaced the screen on my girlfriend's iPhone 4 and it's been great for a few days. Then today, while she was out, the phone shut off and wouldn't turn on without a wall charger.

it doesn't seem to be the screen connection, or any connection because the phone operates correctly. I reseated the battery twice, and the phone turns on now properly. What's happening now is that the phone is overheating after a few minutes of use.

Do you think the battery needs to be reseated again? The battery is bad? The battery connector was damaged?

The phone is holding charge and seems to be working properly aside from the overheating issue. Batteries are cheap, motherboards (though i haven't looked) probably aren't.

Thoughts? thanks in advance.

Had some issues with an iPhone which were similar to this case. Replaced one screen for a customer of mine after she broke it. She brought it back cause it was black.. I assumed I just had a bad batch of screens. Checked seating of battery and reseated and checked connections to LCD. I have now burned out two screens because of heat. Never thought to check heat. Just happened to be charging it for her and noticed it was very hot. Gets hot at the upper most part of the logic board on left side very near the camera. Replacing the logic board was the remember but now I have a board that seems to want to continually overheat to the point where battery charge declines rapidly.

Moral of the story is to check heats. What caused it? Probably something I did ..
