trying to upgrade to larger hard drive

I have cloned my internal HD and it runs fine. I can't get it to boot off of it when I hold the option key and restart. It won't find the upgrade HDD in an external enclosure. The drive shows up on the screen and I can access it when the computer has booted.

Any hints from someone that has done this before?

Options

You are probably trying to boot from a USB external drive. ZYou need a firewire external connection to boot from it.
