Can the DVD-ROM drive be upgraded?

Can the DVD-ROM drive be upgraded? That is, can I use a DVD Combo or Super Drive in the Mercury 400MHz or 500MHz computer?

Thanks for any more DVD upgrading.

Sure, it can be upgraded. The problem is finding one. Here's three of iFixits: http://www.ifixit.com/Mac-Parts/PowerBoo...

Here's how to install it: Installing PowerBook G4 Titanium Mercury DVD Drive

Thanks for your reply. I was concerned if the ribbon cable was the same for a CD-RW/DVD-RW (DL?) drive or if there was any other mechanical differences that would prevent installation. Thanks again for your fast input!

mrdagar,

Oops? I ran into a stumbling block on using a Combo or Super DVD Drive in a Mercury 400MHz or 500MHz computer? The Help Page said: "A different cable is required to connect a Combo drive to the logic board.". Unfortunately, there's No Link anywhere to an explanation of where to Find such "different cables"? Help! - Any suggestions?

mrdagar,

For the correct cable contact iFixit directly here and tell them what you want to do: http://www.ifixit.com/Info/contact
