Is Optical Drive ncessary to run MacBook 1.83Ghz?
The optical drive on my macbook 1.83 is making grinding noises. Can I remove it and not replace it and still have my mac book work?

It will work just find with out the drive in. You can also get a optical bay hard drive adapter and install a second drive with it: [linked product missing or disabled: IF107-078]

While you at it pick up an external Firewire DVD drive you can move from computer to computer. I suggest Firewire so you can boot with it. +
