Differences touch 2G

History

Guys,

Any ideas if the parts in this iPod are different from the touch 2G. I busted the screen, and would like to order a replacement touchpanel.

Just to clarify, the parts would only be different in models with 16GB or memory or higher. The 8GB model remains identical between the 2G and 3G except for a price drop.

According to the guide here, the parts are not compatible. Step 6 says that the ribbon cable is ever so slightly wider.

This is not surprising- the iPhone 3GS and 3G are the same way.

Thats because its not technically a 3g, its a rebranded 2g.

Exactly, the only thing new was the price.

If the 2G is identical to the 3G (8GB) does the 3G 8GB run the 2ND Gen firmware, or the 3RD Gen firmware, and if you jailbreak the device, will it behave like a 2nd gen and be unteathered (can reboot on it's own without being plugged in) or the 3rd gen and be teathered (Needs to be plugged into a computer to be turned on)?

@Chris Green unfortunately i cannot give you a positive answer on the or not. The "3rd" gen 8GB were a reissue of the 2nd gen's, but shipped with iPhone OS 3.x without the Voice Control function. its possible that you may be able to, but i cannot be positive. If i find out for sure, i will let you know!

The firmware is the same, as more was revealed in the keynote today, the 3rd gen 8 gig really is the 2nd gen 8 gig.
